    Stressed Out in India’s Tech Capital

     

    A marketing and sales professional with Microsoft in Bangalore.  Most of the young Indian executives, Sapre and her husband Parag who works wit h the Satyam Computer Services Ltd.  thought a stint working at a giant IT corporation in Bangalore that would be a great addition to their resumes.  The Sapres are stressed out and ready to move to Kuala Lumpur of the capital of Malaysia.  There jobs keep so busy that they only meet each other on weekends. There was a 15-minute hailstorm and it brought the city to a standstill.  The laid-back provincial city into a crowded, cosmopolitan metropolis of sky-high salaries and even higher ambitions.

    The city is a microcosm of the changes India has gone through during the last two decades.  Rising incomes have brought significant socio-economic and lifestyle changes India had gone. The young people are having to confront a host of harrying questions such as how long to hold out before giving in to family pressure to have an arranged marriage.  The greater degree of the upward social mobility has come high levels of the work-related stress working night shifts at a call center fielding customer-service calls from the US is not conducive to physical or psychological health.  The increasing number of young professionals, including the Information Technology sector workers are reporting psychological problems.m   The Department of Psychiatry at NIMHANS says that he usually sees a half a dozen techies on the outpatient days and the most commonly reported problems are marital discord and depression.

    The country’s attention was drawn  to a case in which an Infosys software engineer killed his own wife and himself because he suspected her of infidelity.   The study shows that the Bangalore has a suicide rate nearly three times the national average.  Even though the Information Technology industry is not the only one facing the crisis, it is the most visibly affected.  The problem to this is that many leading Information Technologies companies such as the Infosys and Cisco are offering in-house counseling services for the employees.   The companies have seen individuals breaking down and they realize that they need to play a part to prevent it.

    Debt is something that the Indians have never been comfortable with.  Mounting the credit card bills become uncertainty over the downsizing and job cuts.  There generation has seen in their parents stay with the same job for life.  Most of the changes that are daunting because they have happened so quickly that the society and the individuals have has not to develop a response.  The Chief people officer at a software solutions provider Symphony Services saying that the Information Technology sector needs to evolve a long-term solution.  What they need to do is to train more and educate employees to expand their zone of comfort and to draw upon their inner resources.  They are taking in all the brilliant Mensa Club types and they must provide with a better support system so they can perform.  This is to show that outsourcing always be a trend to every country.
