With an estimated 47 percent joining brand communities as they near the 2 billion mark for internet users, social media continuous to be a formidable market channel. Among social networks there are 1.5 billion visits made by people per day with Facebook overtaking Google as the most popular websites in the US and accumulating over 500 million users. Recognizing social media’s potential, they thought it would interesting to weigh in on the different social media campaigns that has drawn their attention and they kept them amused. In the Happiness Machine, at the beginning of the year, Coca Cola released the YouTube video, the happiness machine. The video quiskly went viral and a few months later, Coke released a UK edition of the campaign. Together the two videos have entered more than 3 million views, garned numerous favorable reviews as well as a Gold Interactive Award at the 2010 Clio Awards. This is not bad for a campaign that Coke did not have to spend a single cent on to promote.
When Pepsi announced that they would not be having a Super Bowl ad in favor of a $20 million social media campaign, people called it either a big mistake or a brilliant plan. It was a gamble that luckily paid off. The campaigns has been a huge success that accumulating more votes than the last US presidential elections. The Pepsi has received more than 12,000 ideas of how to refresh the world and so far the company has funded 256 ideas, granting more than $10 million for making the world a better place. The campaign also helped Pepsi to grow its social media influence from over 250,000 facebook fans to almo9st 2 million to date.
